Walking and driving instructions

Fish Falls is roughly a 30 minutes’ drive away from Halls Gap. From Halls Gap Town Centre head north on the C216. On the junction with C222, turn left and follow it for the next 16.8km. Then turn right onto Wartook Rd and stay, then turn left. You will reach a car park in 1km. The road surface is sealed.

The huge car park is well signposted (‘Mackenzie Falls’). All types of facilities are available here, including toilets and picnic tables.

From the parking turn left and follow a well-maintained Mackenzie Falls track which brings you to the upper lookout platform (just above the falls), and then a set of stairs brings you to the base of the falls. The track comes very close to the falls – you can touch the water. You reach the base of Mackenzie falls in 10-15 minutes. From here, walk downstream for 20 minutes. The track crosses the Mackenzie River (probably, impassable after heavy rain) then follows the river. The track doesn’t have any significant uphill sections, and relatively easy. At the end of the walk, when you reach the top of the Fish Falls, you will need to walk down a set of stairs. The waterfall is a two steps drop. Impressive after rain, but stunning in a dry season either. Return back via the same route. The way back usually takes longer, something between 35 and 50 minutes (you need to walk up the stairs).

We highly recommend visiting Broken Falls on the way back. It is a short, 5 minutes sidetrack, from the main path to the viewing platform.

Note: usually, we recommend to visit waterfalls after rain. This one probably is an exception. Because the track to the base of the falls comes very close to the waterfall, it could be wet and slippery during/after a rain.
