Walking and driving instructions
Wheel of Fire Cascades are roughly a 1 hour’ drive away from Mackay. From Mackay head west along the State Route 70, then turn right onto the State Route 64. After 58km of driving, in Finch Hatton turn right onto Peoples St, which becomes Gorge Rd. Follow this road for the next 8.6km until you reach the end of the road. The road surface is un-sealed for roughly last 2km. The car park, at the end of the road, has toilets and an information board. From the Finch Hatton Picnic Area follow a well-signposted walking track which leads to the Araluen Cascades and Wheel of Fire. Roughly in the middle of the walk, you reach a turn-off leading to the Araluen Falls, keep to the right and after 20-25 minutes of further walk you reach the Wheel of Fire Falls. En route is a creek crossing which can be impassible after heavy rain - take extra care. The second part of the trail is more challenging with a few uphill walking sections and lots of wooden stairs. Wheel of Fire Falls are a series of cascades. The final cascade is the tallest and it's a very popular swimming hole. Don't forget a towel. Return either via the same route (4.2km return; total walking time is about 1.5-2hrs). Wheel of Fire Cascades are a permanent waterfall. Best time to visit - Feb-Mar. |
