Walking and driving instructions
|
Festoon Falls is located about a 1 hour and 30-minute drive from Toowoomba, or approximately 1 hour from Dalby. From Dalby, head northeast on Dalby Cooyar Road for 25.7 km. Turn left onto the well-signposted Bunya Mountains Road and continue for another 34 km. The final 15 km is a winding mountain road, so drive carefully. Then turn right onto Bunya Avenue, which leads to the Dandabah car park in about 750 metres. The road is sealed the entire way. The Dandabah car park offers a range of facilities, including an information centre (i-Site), café, toilets, picnic tables, and a campsite. Festoon Falls and Tim Shea Falls are located along the Scenic Circuit—a 4 km loop walk that takes approximately 1 hour and 20 minutes to complete. From the car park, follow the well-marked Scenic Circuit in an anti-clockwise direction. After 15–20 minutes, you’ll reach Festoon Falls (clearly signposted). McGrory Falls is located downstream, but only the top is visible from the trail. From Festoon Falls, you can either return the way you came (making the total walk about 30–40 minutes) or continue on the loop. About 20 minutes further along the trail is Pine Gorge Lookout, and another 20 minutes brings you to Tim Shea Falls (also signposted). Continue along the loop to return to the car park in another 20 minutes, completing the full walk in approximately 1 hour and 20 minutes. Please note: the section of the track leading directly to Festoon Falls may be closed. It is strongly recommended to stay on the official route. You can check the latest trail status through the local Department of Environment website.
Festoon Falls may dry up during extended dry spells, so the best time to visit is after steady rainfall, typically between January and March. |
