National Falls

National Falls

There are actually two waterfalls—Upper and Lower National Falls—that can be accessed from McKell Avenue in Royal National Park. These falls are the reason the area is named Waterfall.

Walking and driving instructions

National Falls is located about a 1 hour and 10-minute drive from Sydney CBD. From the city center, head south on the M1 and then continue onto the A1. After approximately 44 km, take the McKell Avenue exit in Waterfall, which is clearly marked with a ‘Royal National Park’ sign. Follow McKell Avenue for 2.9 km. The signed car park is on the left side of the sealed road. Please note, park entry fees are $12 per vehicle per day.

The car park has no facilities other than a signboard about the waterfall, and the nearest toilets are located in Waterfall village. As of late 2018, the parking area was in poor condition with some potholes, so drive carefully and slowly.

Access to the top of the falls is an easy 1-minute walk from the car park. Here, you can see a small cascade and view the top of the upper falls from a distance.

Walk to the far end of the parking area toward the beaches, where you will find a sign for ‘Upper Falls’. From this point, a staircase leads down to the base of the upper falls. The top of the lower falls is visible from the end of this track, but unfortunately, access to the base of the lower falls is no longer permitted.

About halfway along the track, look for a side path that takes you behind the upper falls—be cautious, as this section can be slippery.

Return via the same route. The total walking time is around 10 to 15 minutes.

National Falls is a permanent waterfall, with the best time to visit being after significant rainfall.
