Walking and driving instructions
Mackenzie Falls is roughly a 30 minutes’ drive away from Halls Gap. From Halls Gap Town Centre head north on the C216. On the junction with C222, turn left and follow it for the next 16.8km. Then turn right onto Wartook Rd and stay, then turn left. You will reach a car park in 1km. The road surface is sealed. The huge car park is well signposted. All types of facilities are available here, including toilets and picnic tables. You’ve got two choices: the easiest but less spectacular is to follow the walking-path which leads to the upper lookout platform. From the parking, turn right and follow a well-formed track which is suitable for wheel-chair. It doesn’t have any stairs or significant uphill sections. In 15-20 you will reach the lookout platform. You will see the falls from a distance, there is no direct access to the falls from here. Return via the same route. Alternatively, from the parking turn left and follow a well-maintained track which brings you to another upper lookout platform (just above the falls), and then a set of stairs brings you to the base of the falls. The track comes very close to the falls – you can touch the water. You reach the base of the falls in 10-15 minutes. From here, we would highly recommend walking downstream for 2 minutes to visit stunning cascades. Also, you can walk downstream for 20 more minutes to visit Fish Falls. Return via the same route. From the base of the Mackenzie Falls, walk up the stairs and return to the parking. The way back usually takes longer, something between 15 and 30 minutes. We highly recommend visiting Broken Falls on the way back. It is a short, 5 minutes side track, from the main path to the viewing platform. Note: usually, we recommend to visit waterfalls after rain. This one probably is an exception. Because the track to the base of the falls goes very close to the waterfall, it could be wet and slippery during/after rain. |
